Elvese in Summer

From the other side of the Leine

Elvese is a small village located in the south of Lower-Saxony, Germany. It belongs to the municipality Nörten-Hardenberg, which lies between the cities Northeim and Göttingen. (South of Hannover)

History

Elvese was first mentioned in 822 in a document of the monastery Corvey (as Eulfeshusen), but there are references that people settled in the area even earlier. In later history the village belonged to different families from Northeim or Göttingen. In the 16th century the village came under the rule of the dukes of Hardenberg, which later became a part of the state of Hannover. When the new municipality Nörten-Hardenberg was fomed in the 20th century Elvese became a part of it.

Area

Elvese lies in the Leine Valley, more exactly on the bordering hills of the valley. While the valley itself is rather flat, the village has some small hills on which some of the houses are located. The historical core of the village lies between these hills. In the past the inhabitants of Elvese were mainly farmers. Today there is only one farmer left, who does his farming more as a spare time activity than as a normal job. Most inhabitants today are working in the neighbouring cities like Göttingen or Northeim.

Places to see

From Elvese it is easy to visit several cities like Northeim and Göttingen with their historic buildings. Northeim even has some parts of the old town wall. For people who are interested in castles there is also a lot to see. One can visit the castle of Hardenberg or the Plesse.

West of Elvese one can find the Solling mountains and in the east the Harz mountains.
